Colorado Ballet is proud to offer a performance of The Nutcracker for children and adults with ASD and other sensory sensitivities, different abilities, or special needs on Thursday, December 2nd at 11:00am! This production will have sensory-friendly adaptations and will also provide a relaxed environment for all patrons in attendance.
The beloved holiday favorite returns in a dazzling production like no one's ever seen, featuring all new sets and costumes created especially for Colorado Ballet. A sellout every year, this magical tale of Clara, the Nutcracker and the Mouse King is going to be dreamier than ever.
*PLEASE NOTE: ALL PATRONS MUST ALSO ADHERE TO THE COLORADO BALLET COVID ATTENDANCE POLICY FOUND HERE.*
What makes it “sensory-friendly”? This performance features a friendly, supportive environment for families with a loved one with special needs. Adaptations to the performance are slight, including:
1. Elimination of potentially startling special effects and lighting
2. House lights on at about 20%
3. Typically, we would also lower sound levels, however this is unfortunately not an option with our live orchestra - please bring headphones or earplugs as needed (there will be a limited number available at the theatre)
PLUS, at this performance we will have:
4. Relaxed house rules - you are free to get up, move around, and leave whenever you need to
5. Allowed use of iPads and other electronics for therapeutic uses
6. Volunteers scattered throughout the theatre to assist and direct audience members as needed
7. Quiet areas and activity areas in the lobby for taking a break
8. Audio description
Also note that Colorado Ballet staff, dancers, ushers, and volunteers receive training from our partner organizations to ensure that the performance is a welcoming, inclusive and memorable experience for all of our patrons. For more information or questions contact education@coloradoballet.org.
